I picked up this game when I got my copy of FFXIII. It takes place before Star Ocean I begins.

Spoiler! (select text to read the spoiler)
From my assessment of the storyline (and without reading it from any external website), I believe that the events of Star Ocean: The Last Hope run parallel to the time period in which Ratix and his friends go back in time to save Roak, since there is mention of the stone sickness in The Last Hope when your party visits Roak (the lead female character becomes infected with it). I estimate that The Last Hope takes place approximately 100 years before Star Ocean I, and since Ratix goes back in time by 100 years into Roak's past, this is why I've concluded that these events are happening at the same time along the Star Ocean timeline.

However, in The Last Hope, there is mention of a cure for the stone sickness already existing, while the whole purpose of Star Ocean I was for your party to go back in time so that they can make a remedy in the present. A small contradiction.

Interesting speculation, I too noticed that parallel. However I don't know if they are actually connected.
I thought the game was a prequel in the sense where it was just around the time they started to explore the vast world of Star Ocean (because of the situation that was happening on Earth) - I can't say if it connects with the other Star Ocean stories.

Oh, I know they're not related. I just find it an interesting concept that the main characters of Star Ocean I and Star Ocean: The Last Hope were probably running around the same planet at the same time, thus two stories unfolding parallel in the timeline.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope supposedly takes place before Star Ocean I, and you can determine through the storyline (if you're paying close enough attention) just how long before Star Ocean I it takes place.

I have spent an enormous amount of time on this game (450 hours 3 play-throughs)
IMHO this is an awesome game. It definitely takes place before the events of Star Ocean 1. While not a direct prequel, the game shows the beginning of the entire series, as well as how and why some of the "Star Trek Prime Directive" rules are in place.

All in all, it is an awesome game that I recommend. The post-credit content will keep you busy way longer than the 80 hour story does. Just getting up to level 255 to even stand a chance against Queenie will take you a long time.

Well worth the $30 you can pick it up for now.

I've finally got the PS3 version yesterday and I've played it for 3 hours now and I like it. The new features in the battle system are nice. And the battle trophies are back and it seems now every character has 100 to get.

What I don't like is the menu, I can't even see the amount of HP since it's too bright...
And the game seems to have some framedrops.
